Q: I would like to register for the Korean Language Class.
A: The registration for the 2nd Quarter 2024 will be done on March 28, 2024 (Thursday). The registration will be done ONLINE. Application form link will be uploaded on this website on March 28th (Thursday) at 9:00AM. The registration will be done on a first-come, first-served basis but Seoul Residents will be PRIORITIZED. (*For Absolute Beginner 1, the number of A visa holders will be limited to 7 seats, 1 per each nationality)
Q: When will the new semester start?
A: The 2nd Quarter will start on April 8, 2024 and will last for 10 weeks. (*subject to change)
Q: Can I register now for the next semester?
A: No. Registration is done on a specific day (March 28th, Thursday, starting at 9:00AM). If you have studied Korean before, you will have to take a level test before registration. ADVANCE REGISTRATION IS NOT ALLOWED.
Q: Can I register through email?
A: No. For ONLINE Registration will be done through a (google form) link that will be uploaded on our website, Seoul Foreigner Portal, and Yongsan-gu Office English Website.
Q: When is the registration?
A: The registration for the 1st Quarter 2024 will be done on March 28, 2024 (Thursday). The registration will be done ONLINE. Q: Do I need to take the level test?
A: If you have studied Korean before, you will need to take the level test in the period for the level test in order to determine which class you should take. If you have not studied Korean before, you don't need to take the level test. Please see the image below:
Q: You mentioned that Seoul residents will be prioritized, why is that? I think it is discriminatory to do that.
A: Itaewon Global Village Center was established and is being funded by the Seoul Metropolitan Government. Thus, our programs and services are meant for Seoul foreign residents. Accordingly, we MUST prioritize Seoul residents.
Q: How do I prove that I live in Seoul? Do I need to show my house contract?
A: We will base it on the registered address at the back of your alien registration card (foreigner registration card). If the registered address is not Seoul, then it might be a disadvantage for you.
Q: What if I am in the process of moving but I haven't registered my soon-to-be new address, will I still be eligible to register?
A: As there are too many registrants, we cannot bend the rules on this. Hence, we will only check the back of your ARC to see whether you are a registered citizen of Seoul.
Q: If I live outside Seoul does it mean I cannot take the classes even if I can go to the center to take the classes or if the class is online?
A: If there are spots available, you may join. However, as mentioned, Seoul residents will be prioritized. Even if you are the first to register, you will immediately be on the waiting list.
Q: What is the schedule of the classes?
A: Classes are only held on weekdays (Mon & Wed class OR Tues & Thurs class). One session runs for one and a half hours between the time of 9:00 am-9:10 pm. Class time varies depending on your level. Each quarter runs for 10 weeks (20 sessions). For the 2024 Second Quarter, please refer to this table: (*please note that the class schedule may change depending on the circumstances)
Q: Are the classes online or in-person? A: Some classes are done online and some are done in person. Please refer to the table above.
Q: How much is the fee?
A: It is free of charge, but students must buy their own books.
Q: Can I buy the textbook at Itaewon GVC?
A: No. Itaewon GVC does not sell books. Textbooks must be purchased at a bookstore (complete details will be given to you after registration).
Q: Are children also allowed to join Korean language classes?
A: These Korean language classes are only open to Foreign adults aged 18 years old and above. Korean language classes for kids will be announced separately.
Q: How many students are there in one class?
A: Each class has a maximum of 16 students for Lower Beginner - Intermediate Classes. Maximum of 15 students for Absolute Beginner levels.
Q: I work during the class. And since it's an online class, can I just listen and turn off my camera while the class is ongoing?
A: We expect our students to interact with the teacher during the class. So as much as possible all students must turn their cameras on during the class.
1. Q: I only have a tourist visa (B-1 / B-2 / C-1 / C-3 / C-4) but if I go to another country for a few days and come back to Korea, my tourist visa will be extended for another three months. I believe that I can still attend the Korean classes. Can I register for the class?
A: Unfortunately, no. First of all, these classes are created to help foreign residents live in Korea. “Foreign residents” pertain to foreigners who have a valid visa to stay in Korea for more than 90 days continuously, without having to leave the country. Secondly, not all foreigners with a tourist visa can automatically get an extension of three months when they leave the country for a short time and come back to Korea. To be fair to everyone, we have decided not to allow tourist visa holders to register for our Korean language classes.
2. Q: I just arrived in Korea a month ago. I have submitted all my documents to the immigration office and they are processing my alien registration card (ARC). Can I still register for the class despite not receiving my ARC?
A: Yes, just bring the official receipt (접수증) from the Immigration Office to prove that your ARC is being processed.
3. Q: I have a D-10 visa and it will expire two months after the start of Korean language classes. I know I can renew my alien registration card. Can I register for the Korean language class?
A: It depends. We prioritize students who can finish the whole semester so the validity period of your ARC is very important. Visas like “D-10” are not assured that they will be extended. While it is usually extended, this is not always the case. There are times when an extension of stay in Korea can be denied. So if the validity period of your ARC does not cover the whole session, we can only put you on the waiting list.
4. Q: I have taken the level test at OOO Global Village Center and the test result shows that I am qualified for their Lower Beginner Korean Class. However, I cannot attend their classes because of the schedule so they recommended I join Itaewon Global Village Center’s Classes instead. Can I join the classes without having to take the level test again?
A: You still have to take the level test. The level test in other Global Village Centers (is different from our center’s level test. Also, their level system is different from ours which is why you need to take the level test first. If you pass, you can register for our classes if there is still a spot.
5. Q: I have studied the Korean language at one of the universities in Seoul. I have finished level 1. Can I register for the class without having to take the level test? to
A: No. You have to take the level test to determine which class you belong.
6. Q: I took the level test two weeks ago but I failed. Can I study and take the level test again?
A: No. You only have one chance to take the test (per semester). If you fail, it means you have to take Absolute Beginner 1 (lowest level). Again, you can only register if there is still a spot.
7. Q: I want to register for Absolute Beginner 1 for the next session. I know the registration for that will be two months from now but I want to be sure that I get a spot. Can I register now?
A: No. We do not allow advance registration.
8. Q: My visa will expire in a month. If I enroll in Itaewon GVC’s Korean language classes, will your center be able to sponsor my visa?
A: No. Itaewon GVC (or any other global village center) does not provide any type of visa sponsorship. Korean language classes are for foreigners who are residing in Korea as legal residents (please read question no. 1).
9. Q: I am planning to apply for a permanent residency visa in Korea so I am interested in taking Korean language classes at your center. Are you going to give me a certificate that I can submit to the Immigration Office as proof of my Korean language skills?
A: We do give certificates of completion for students who pass the semester based on their attendance rate and examination results. However, these certificates are not for official use. Immigration Office will not recognize these certificates as proof of your Korean language skills. What you need to submit to the Immigration Office is the TOPIK score certificate or KIIP Completion Certificate (for more details about this please call 1345).
10. Q: I work and so I don’t think I can focus on studying the Korean language. I need to learn some basic Korean words to help me get by daily. I also, don’t think I can come to class every now and then because of my work. Is it possible to sit in and come by whenever I feel like it?
A: Itaewon GVC offers FREE Korean language classes. Since this is free, we have a set of rules to follow. Think of it as having a Korean government scholarship (yes, we are using taxpayers’ money). Therefore, we expect students to diligently attend classes. Also please bear in mind that, students who are not able to attend more than 60% of the class session and who did not pass the required exam scores cannot register for 2 consecutive semesters.

11. Q: I took the level test and the result was Absolute Beginner 2. I think the class is too easy for me so I want to move to a higher level.
A: You can do that with the permission of the teacher of the next level. However, if there are no spots for the level you want to join, you cannot register for that class.
12. Q: I signed up for the 9:00 am~10:30 am class but because of my work, I need to leave about 10~15 minutes early every class time.
A: Sorry but we do not allow students to leave early (or be late every class time). This is because our classroom is very small that students cannot get in and out of the classroom without disturbing other students. Also, since our class is for 1 hour 30 minutes only, 10~15 minutes of class time is really important so that we can assure that we can cover the chapters that you need to study for this semester. This rule also applies to those who have to be late for every class time or those who can only attend 1 session/per week.

A: 만약 자리가 있다면 가능할 수 있습니다. 하지만 위에 언급했듯이, 서울시민이 우선 이용이 적용되기 때문에 일찍 등록했다 하더라도 서울시민이 아닐 경우 대기자에 먼저 등록됨을 양해 바랍니다.
Q: 수업 스케줄은 어떻게 되나요?
A: 한 수업은 한 시간 반이고, 일주일에 두 번, 월요일/수요일 또는 화요일/목요일 수업입니다. 평일에 수업이 진행되며 수업 시간은 레벨에 따라 다릅니다(오전 9시에서 저녁 9시 10분 사이). 한 학기는 10주입니다(총 20강).

A: 수업시간동안 선생님과 수강생들은 상호작용을 하며 진행됩니다. 수업시간동안 학생들은 비디오를 가능한한 켜두셔야 합니다.

1. 답변) 등록할 수 없습니다. 이 과정은 한국에 거주하는 외국인들의 생활을 돕기 위해서 만들어졌기 때문입니다. 또한 모든 관광비자가 한국을 떠났다가 돌아올 경우 3개월 연장이 가능한 것이 아니기 때문에 이는 형평성에 어긋납니다.
2. 질문) 저는 한국에 한달 전에 도착했습니다. 외국인 등록증(ARC)은 아직 신청 중에 있습니다. 한국어 강좌에 외국인등록증 없이 등록할 수 있나요?
2. 답변) 네. 출입국·외국인청(출입국·외국인사무소)으로부터 외국인 등록증을 신청했다는 접수증을 가지고 오면 등록할 수 있습니다.
3. 질문) 제 비자 종류는 D-10 이고 한국어 수업 시작 두 달 뒤에 만료예정입니다. 이후 외국인 등록증 연장을 신청할 수 있습니다. 한국어 강의에 등록할 수 있나요?
3. 답변) 경우에 따라 다릅니다. 저희는 한국어 강의를 다 마칠 수 있는 학생에게 등록 우선권을 주고 있기 때문에 만료일자는 중요합니다. D-10 비자는 대부분 연장이 가능하지만 경우에 따라 아닌 경우도 있습니다. 그래서 외국인 등록증 만료일자가 한국어 수업 종료일 보다 앞이라면 대기자 명단에만 넣어드릴 수 있습니다.
4. 질문) 저는 OOO 글로벌 빌리지 센터에서 레벨테스트를 받았습니다. 초급을 받았는데 일정이 맞지 않아서 이태원 글로벌 빌리지 센터에 등록을 하라는 권유를 받았습니다. 레벨테스트를 받지 않고 등록할 수 있을까요?
4. 답변) 아니요. 레벨테스트를 다시 봐야 합니다. 타 글로벌 센터는 저희 센터와는 다른 레벨 테스트 시스템을 가지고 있습니다. 레벨테스트 후 레벨에 맞는 반에 자리가 남아있으면 등록할 수 있습니다.
5. 질문) 저는 한국에 있는 대학교 어학당에서 한국어를 공부한적이 있습니다. 저는 레벨 1을 마쳤는데 레벨테스트 없이 센터의 같은 레벨 반에 등록할 수 있나요?

10 답변) 이태원글로벌빌리지센터는 무료한국어를 제공하고 있기 때문에 저희의 규정을 따라주셔야 합니다. 저희 기관은 서울시의 세금으로 운영되고 있으며 꾸준히 출석할 수 있는 학생들에게만 기회를 제공합니다. 또한 수업을 듣더라도 출석률이 60% 를 넘어야 하고 중간 시험을 통과해야만 다음 레벨로 수업신청이 가능합니다.

12. 답변) 날마다 수업시간을 지킬 수 없는 경우 등록할 수 없습니다. 저희 센터의 교실은 비교적 작기 때문에 학생들이 수업 중에 이동을 하면 다른 학생들이 방해 받을 수 있습니다. 그리고 수업시간이 1시간 30분이기 때문에 10-15분은 수업의 많은 부분을 차지 합니다. 이는 계속하여 수업에 늦게 와야 하거나 일주일(총 두 번 수업) 중에 한 번만 올 수 있는 경우에도 적용됩니다.
